My 10-year-old son needed a way to drill math problems that did not apply time pressure. At school, mandatory "rocket math" left him unhinged and Xtramath threw salt in those wounds. At home I looked for iPad apps and found they mostly rewarded for speed (such as bell rings for fast answers and sheep bleats for slow); they also lacked settings for targeting weak areas or a capacity to review wrong answers. Then I tripped across MathBoard ($4.99)--just what we needed! This chalk-board-style app allows users all the think time they want, a scratch space for problem solving, and numerous options for fine tuning (we are currently drilling multiplication for digits 3 - 9). Quizzes of wrong answers are also generated (among many other features). Relieved of built-in time pressure, my son is now building his skills, and to my surprise, working to complete quizzes faster and faster (now that he can play just against himself!)
